Start Low, Go Slow
How Much Should I Take? A Real Dosing Guide
It’s the question we hear more than any other, and it’s the right one to ask: how much should I take? The honest answer is that there’s no single number — cannabis affects everyone differently, and the same person can react differently on two different days. But there is a method that works for almost everyone, and it’s simple: start low, go slow, and let it catch up to you.
The one rule that never fails
Take a small amount, then wait before taking more. Almost every uncomfortable cannabis experience comes from the same mistake — not feeling it fast enough, taking more, and then all of it arriving at once. You can always take a little more in twenty minutes. You can’t take less once it’s in.
How much, by product
- Flower & pre-rolls (smoked or vaped): Effects arrive in seconds to a couple of minutes, so this is the easiest to pace. Take one small puff, wait a full minute, and see where you land before the next. A little goes further than most people expect.
- Vape cartridges: Same fast onset as flower. One short 2–3 second draw, then wait. Oil is often more potent than flower, so treat that first pull as your test.
- Edibles: The one to respect. A standard serving in Missouri is 10 mg THC, and if you’re new or coming back after a break, 2.5–5 mg is a smart first dose. Edibles take 45 minutes to 2 hours to kick in and last far longer than smoking — so wait the full two hours before deciding you need more. This is where “I didn’t feel anything so I took another” goes wrong.
- Concentrates (dabs): The strongest way to consume, often 70–90%+ THC. This is an experienced-user product. If you’re curious, the smallest possible amount — a “rice grain” — is plenty to start.
Your tolerance is personal — and it moves
Body weight, metabolism, how often you consume, whether you’ve eaten, and your own body chemistry all change how a dose feels. If you consume regularly, your tolerance climbs and you’ll need more for the same effect. Take a few days off and it resets — which means the dose that felt light last month can feel strong again. When in doubt, treat yourself like a first-timer.
THC% isn’t the whole story
A higher THC number means stronger, not “better.” A balanced strain with some CBD and a rich terpene profile can feel more comfortable than a maxed-out THC number that leaves you racy. If you want to understand why, our terpene guide breaks it down.
If you take too much
It’s uncomfortable, not dangerous — no one has ever fatally overdosed on cannabis. If you overdo it: find a calm, safe spot, hydrate with water, and know it will pass. Some people find that black pepper (chewed or sniffed) or a little CBD takes the edge off. Rest, ride it out, and start lower next time.
The goal isn’t to feel as much as possible — it’s to feel good. Start low, go slow, and you’ll dial in the amount that’s right for you. Stay Rooted.
