Terpenes & strains, the honest version.

The aroma you smell when we open a jar isn’t just a nice bonus — it’s the best clue to how a strain will actually feel. Here’s the plain-English guide to terpenes, so you can shop by what you want, not by a label.

Start here

Forget “indica vs. sativa” (mostly).

For years people were told indica means “sleepy” and sativa means “energetic.” It’s a handy shorthand — but it’s not very reliable. Those words really describe how the plant grows, not how it makes you feel.

What actually shapes your experience is the mix of cannabinoids (like THC and CBD) and terpenes (the aroma compounds) in that specific batch. Two “indicas” can feel completely different. Two totally different-looking strains can feel almost the same. The label on the front tells you less than the terpene profile on the back — and less than your own nose.

So what is a terpene?

Terpenes are the natural oils that give every plant its smell — pine trees, lavender, citrus peel, fresh hops. Cannabis is loaded with them, and they’re what make one strain smell like diesel and lemon and another like berries and pepper.

They’re not just perfume. Terpenes are increasingly believed to shape the character of each strain — whether it feels bright and chatty or heavy and restful — working alongside THC rather than on their own.

The entourage effect

This is the idea that cannabis works best as a team: THC, CBD, and a strain’s full terpene lineup interacting together produce something richer than THC alone.

It’s why a 22% THC strain heavy in calming terpenes can feel gentler than an 18% strain built for a heady rush. The number on the label is only part of the story — the whole profile is what you feel.

The line-up

Eight terpenes worth knowing.

You don’t need to memorize these — but recognizing a couple by smell will change how you shop. Ask us to open a jar and see which ones you’re drawn to.

Myrcene aroma — smells like Earthy, musky, ripe mango

Myrcene

Smells like: Earthy, musky, ripe mango

The most common terpene in cannabis. Tends to show up in rich, deeply relaxing, wind-down profiles — the classic “heavy” feel people associate with indica.

Also found in: Mango, lemongrass, hops, thyme

Reach for it when: You want to unwind and settle at the end of a long day.

Limonene aroma — smells like Bright citrus, lemon & orange peel

Limonene

Smells like: Bright citrus, lemon & orange peel

Uplifting and mood-brightening. Often found in sociable, daytime-leaning strains that feel lighter and more talkative.

Also found in: Citrus rinds, juniper, peppermint

Reach for it when: You want a brighter, more energetic, sociable feel.

Caryophyllene aroma — smells like Black pepper, clove, warm spice

Caryophyllene

Smells like: Black pepper, clove, warm spice

Grounding and calming. It’s the only terpene that interacts with the body’s CB2 receptors, which is why it gets so much attention.

Also found in: Black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, basil

Reach for it when: You want calm and comfort without a heavy head.

Pinene aroma — smells like Fresh pine, rosemary, forest

Pinene

Smells like: Fresh pine, rosemary, forest

Clear-headed and crisp. Commonly linked with a sense of focus and alertness — a good daytime companion.

Also found in: Pine needles, rosemary, basil, dill

Reach for it when: You want to stay clear, functional and focused.

Linalool aroma — smells like Floral lavender, soft spice

Linalool

Smells like: Floral lavender, soft spice

Soothing and mellow — the classic lavender wind-down note. A favorite in calming, restful profiles.

Also found in: Lavender, coriander, birch

Reach for it when: You want to relax, de-stress and quiet down.

Terpinolene aroma — smells like Fresh, herbal, floral-citrus

Terpinolene

Smells like: Fresh, herbal, floral-citrus

Bright and heady. Common in lively, creative, “sativa-leaning” strains — complex and uplifting.

Also found in: Nutmeg, apples, cumin, tea tree

Reach for it when: You want something lively, creative and upbeat.

Humulene aroma — smells like Hoppy, woody, earthy

Humulene

Smells like: Hoppy, woody, earthy

Deep and earthy — the unmistakable “hops” note. Rounds out grounding, full-bodied profiles.

Also found in: Hops, coriander, cloves, sage

Reach for it when: You gravitate to earthy, mellow, grounding strains.

Ocimene aroma — smells like Sweet, herbal, fresh

Ocimene

Smells like: Sweet, herbal, fresh

A light, sweet top-note that tends to feel bright and uplifting. Often blended in as an accent.

Also found in: Mint, parsley, basil, orchids

Reach for it when: You like sweet, fresh, upbeat profiles.

On the label

How to read a strain, in 30 seconds.

Every product on our shelf is lab-tested and clearly labeled. Here’s what those numbers actually mean.

THC %

The headline potency number. Higher isn’t automatically “better” — it just means stronger. New or lighter users are often happiest in the 12–18% range.

CBD (& other cannabinoids)

CBD doesn’t get you high and can take the edge off THC. A little CBD alongside THC tends to feel more balanced and less racy.

Terpene profile

The lineup and percentages of terpenes — the real fingerprint of how a strain feels. If it’s listed, read it; if it isn’t, smell it and ask us.

Test & harvest date

Fresher flower keeps more of its terpenes. A recent test/packaged date usually means a more aromatic, flavorful jar.
