How to Store Cannabis So It Stays Good

Good cannabis is a fresh product — and like anything fresh, how you store it decides how good it stays. Store it right and flower keeps its aroma, potency and smooth burn for months. Store it wrong and it dries out, loses its terpenes, and turns harsh in a few weeks. The good news: keeping it fresh is easy once you know what to protect it from.

The four enemies

Everything about storage comes down to protecting your cannabis from four things:

• Air — oxygen slowly degrades cannabinoids and dries out flower. Keep it in an airtight container, not a baggie.
• Light — UV light breaks down THC faster than almost anything. Store it somewhere dark, or in an opaque container.
• Heat — warmth dries out flower, degrades potency, and can make concentrates runny. Keep it cool, away from windows and appliances.
• Humidity — too damp invites mold; too dry and it crumbles. The sweet spot is 55–62% relative humidity.

Flower

An airtight glass jar in a cool, dark cabinet is the gold standard — it’s why dispensaries use glass. Toss in a humidity pack (the little two-way packets) to hold that 55–62% range and your flower will stay springy and aromatic for months. Avoid clear plastic bags (they cling to trichomes and let in air and light) and skip the freezer — freezing makes the delicate trichomes brittle and they snap right off.

Edibles

Treat them like the food they are: follow the package, keep them sealed, and store gummies and chocolates somewhere cool so they don’t melt or stick. Always keep edibles in their labeled, child-resistant packaging — out of reach of kids and pets, and never mixed in with regular snacks.

Vapes & cartridges

Store them upright in a cool spot to prevent leaking and clogging. Extreme heat thins the oil and extreme cold thickens it, so room temperature and out of the sun is ideal. A cart left on a hot dashboard is a cart you’ll be fighting to hit.

Concentrates

Cool and dark is even more important here. Most concentrates keep best in the fridge in an airtight, non-stick container; let them come back to room temperature before you handle them so they’re workable and don’t pull moisture from the air.

A few quick don’ts

• Don’t store flower in the freezer — brittle trichomes fall off and you lose potency and flavor.
• Don’t leave anything in a hot car; heat is the fastest way to ruin a good product.
• Don’t rely on a sandwich bag — it’s the worst of air, light and static all at once.
• Don’t forget child- and pet-safety: everything sealed, labeled, and well out of reach.
